Bouldering is a form of climbing at a relatively low-level without ropes. It is often enjoyed in small groups with each climber taking it in turns to complete a problem.
A bouldering problem generally won't be higher than five metres and often traverses low to the ground.
The most famous bouldering area in the world is in the forests around Fountainbleau, Paris. It is particularly popular as much of the forest floor is made up of sand, making it ideal for jumping off the boulders. Bouldering is great training for climbing but is also a sport in itself.
The bouldering wall is 10m wide and up to 3.5m high with sand landing and costs £3.50. (Under 18 and want to climb without an adult? Call us to find out about registering)
